Turk Broda
Walter Edward "Turk" Broda was born on May 15, 1914 in Brandon, Manitoba to a Polish-Canadian family. While growing up, the
youngster's neck had a tendency to turn red when he got angry spawning someone to say that he looked like a turkey. As luck
would have it, a short form of turkey would stick with him as his nickname. Conn Smythe acquired Turk Broda from Jack Adams
and the Detroit Red Wings for $8,000 in 1936. The very next year he was playing in goal for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
By 1941 he was a star in Toronto and won the Vezina Trophy that year along with being selected to the All Star Team. The following
season Broda had another great season leading Toronto to the first of his five Stanley Cups with the Maple Leafs. From 1943 to
1945 Turk Broda did what many young did during that era, he left hockey to serve in the military during the Second World War. He
ended his playing career with the Maple Leafs in 1951-52 having spent all 15 of his NHL seasons in Toronto, winning two Vezina
trophies to go along with five Stanley Cups and numerous All-Star nominations. Turk Broda was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
in 1967 and passed away at the age of 58 in 1972.
