King Clancy
Francis Michael "King" Clancy was born on February 25, 1903 in Ottawa, Ontario. He played hockey with a local junior team before
jumping to the Ottawa Senators of the NHL in 1921. The 5'7" and 155 pound defenseman wasn't one to back down from some of the
tougher forwards of his time and earned the respect of his teammates. He gained invaluable experience and was a force on defense
for a Senators team that won two Stnaley Cup championships in 1923 and 1927. But with the great depression putting the squeeze on
citizens, the small market Ottawa Senators were nearing the end of the road.
In a desperate move, King Clancy was sold to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the start of the 1930-31 NHL season for $35,000. His gritty
play and experience on the blueline was helpful to the young Maple Leaf team and helped the them bring the first Stanley Cup
as the Maple Leafs in 1932. King Clancy played for the Leafs until partway through the 1936-37 season but stayed around in hockey,
trying his hand as coach of the Montreal Maroons for the first half of the 1937-38 season. He became a referee, then coached the
Toronto Maple Leafs in the early 1950s and served as assistant General Manager of the team to Punch Imlach. Clancy was inducted as a
player into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958 and passed away in late 1986.
