Wendel Clark
Wendel Clark was born on October 25, 1966 in Kelvington, Saskatchewan. Growing up on the prairies meant that Wendel played hockey in
the winter and helped out his folks on the farm during the summers. He had a prolific career with the Saskatoon Blades of the
Western Hockey League (WHL), excelling in scoring goals and taking care of himself on the ice. He was selected first overall in
the 1985 NHL entry draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wendel made a seamless transistion to the big league, scoring 45 points in
his rookie season to go along with 227 penalty minutes.
The fans in Toronto were quick to take a liking to Clark. He stood at 5'11" but wasn't afraid of taking on much bigger players like
Bob Probert, often coming out on top. But the physical and gritty play also lead to some serious injuries that probably held him
back from playing to his full potential. It started in 1987 when he was cross-checked in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. His
back would never be the same, as Clark did not play a full NHL season for the rest of his career. In 1994 he was dealt by the Leafs
to the Quebec Nordiques in a trade that saw Mats Sundin come to Toronto. Clark played a season in Quebec before going to the New
York Islanders and back in Toronto for a second stint. He continued his journey across the NHL in 1998 playing with the
Tampa Bay Lightning, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. He made his final return to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1999-2000
and retired as one of the more popular players in Leafs history.
