Clarence "Hap" Day
Clarence Day was born on June 14, 1901 in Owen Sound, Ontario. He played hockey in the Owen Sound area before enrolling at the
University of Toronto to study Pharmacy. He continued to play hockey for the varisty team and was considered one of the best
amateur players. His always cheery demeanor earned him the nickname "Happy" which was shortened to "Hap". He played some games
for the Hamilton Tigers of the Ontario Hockey Association and was signed by the Toronto St. Pats for a princely sum of $5,000
per year. Day made his NHL debut with the St. Pats in 1924 with Jack Adams and Babe Dye as his linemates.
The St. Pats eventually turned into the Maple Leafs and the team moved to its new home, Maple Leaf Gardens in 1932. That year Hap
Day lead the team to a Stanley Cup championship and scored some key goals during that run. Day's pharmacist training did not go
to waste as he ran a drug store from Maple Leaf Gardens. Though his playing career ended in 1938 with the New York Americans,
Day wasn't quite done with hockey or the Maple Leafs. After Dick Irvin had left the team, Conn Smythe hired Day to coach the team
in 1940. He oversaw the most successful decade in Toronto Maple Leafs history, winning five Stanely Cup Championships in his ten
year stint as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Clarence "Hap" Day was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1961 and passed
away in 1990.
