Frank Mahovlich
Frank "the Big M" Mahovlich was born on January 10, 1938 in Timmins, Ontario. He played with the St. Michaels team in the Ontario
Hockey Association (OHA) and was property of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Nicknamed "the Big M" due to his big size - 6'1" and 205 pounds -
Mahovlich made the jump to the NHL in 1957. In that first season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the left winger scored 36 points
and won the Calder Trophy as the best rookie that year. After a few sub-par seasons, Frank finally began living up to the high
expectations in 1960-61 by scoring 48 regular season goals.
The next couple of years saw Frank Mahovlich score over 30 goals per season but his strained relationship with coach Punch Imlach and
the fans was a constant distraction. He sufferred from depression and maybe even a nervous breakdown in 1967, missing a month of
the regular season. Yet he helped the Maple Leafs win 4 Stanley Cup championships in the 1960s, including their victory in 1967.
In 1968 he was traded to Red Wings along with Pete Stemkowski, Garry Unger and Carl Brewer, for Paul Henderson, Norm Ullman and
Floyd Smith. He spent a couple of years in Motown, playing with his younger brother Peter Mahovlich before moving on to the Montreal
Canandiens. He won two more Stanley Cups in Montreal before spending a couple of years in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and
retired from hockey in 1978. Frank Mahovlich was indcuted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981 and was appointed to the Canadian
Senate in 1998.
