Darryl Sittler
Darryl Sittler was born on September 18, 1950 in Kitchener, Ontario. He played his junior hockey with the London Knights of the
Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) and was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, #8 overall in the 1970 NHL amateur
entry draft. The centerman started his career with the Maple Leafs in 1970 and had established himself as an emerging superstar two
years later. He was named captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1974 and the 24 year old continued to put up big time points.
On February 7, 1976 he played an incredible game - putting up the most single game points in NHL history. He scored six goals
and added 4 assists on goalie Dave Reece as the Maple Leafs defeated the Boston Bruins 11-4.
Later that year he also represented his country in the Canada Cup tournament, defeating the Czechoslovakian squad. He had his
best offensive year in 1977-79 when he scored 117 points in 80 games. Darryl Sittler was an offensive machine and one of the
most popular players in Toronto. But in 1982 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for Rich Costello and a draft pick. He
spent a couple of years in Philadelphia before being traded to the Detroit Red Wings for Murray Craven and Joe Paterson. Darryl
Sittler ended his pro-hockey career with the Red Wings in 1984 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. Even today,
he continues to be one of the most popular Toronto Maple Leafs.
